Description
Walnut halves (gerdoo) are shelled walnuts kept in large, whole halves, with a buttery flavor and the gentle bitterness of their thin papery skin. In a Persian kitchen walnuts go into stews, dips and sweets as often as they go into the snack bowl, and this 12 oz tub is sized for exactly that.
Grind them for fesenjan, the pomegranate and walnut stew, or for muhammara; chop them over yogurt and salads; or serve them with dates, figs and feta. You may know this tub by the Goldis name printed on its label.
Goaldees ships authentic walnut halves, fast nationwide across the US.
Also known as: گردو (Farsi) · جوز (Arabic)
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these walnuts salted or seasoned?
No. They are plain shelled walnut halves, and the label shows 0 mg sodium. Toast them briefly in a dry pan or a 350°F oven if you want a richer, roasted taste.
Why do walnuts sometimes taste bitter?
A mild bitterness comes from tannins in the thin skin around the nut and is normal. A sharp, paint-like taste is different: it means the oil has gone rancid, which is why fresh, cold-stored walnuts taste noticeably sweeter.
How should I store walnuts?
Walnuts are richer in polyunsaturated fat than most nuts, and that fat oxidizes faster. Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator, or in the freezer for longer storage, and they will hold their flavor far longer than in the pantry.
